Biography

Jeremiah Onyango is a documentary photographer and storytelling enthusiast born and raised in Kibera, a vibrant community on the outskirts of Nairobi. With an unwavering passion for visual storytelling, I have dedicated my life to capturing the essence of my surroundings through the lenses of my camera.

My journey as a photographer began at a young age, inspired by the daily life stories that unfolded around me in Kibera. I found myself drawn to the resilience, hope and dreams that fuels the existence of my fellow residents. Through my photographs, I strive to chronicle our everyday lives, shedding light on the unique character of my community.

My photographs are not mere images, they are narratives, woven together with threads of emotion, history and cultural identity. I believe that by showcasing the strengths and challenges of my community, I can foster understanding, empathy and a collective desire to create a more equitable and sustainable community. I believe in the shared desire of using our voices and capacity to tell different narratives and deconstructing stereotypes. Beyond capturing images, I aspire to enact positive change through my storytelling. My photographs are a testament to the power of storytelling to ignite change and empower my community.
